Maemo Apps Coming To Nokia Ovi Store

Recently, Nokia launched the N900 phone, the first model running on Maemo, which is a Linux based operating system. Nokia plans to launch more phones with Maemo and right now the first applications are available in Maemo Select:

Maemo Select is a web based store that will combine Maemo applications from both the Ovi Store and the Maemo Community. Right now, 47 free applications are available, with wallpapers and themes coming soon.

Maemo applications will also become available in the Nokia Ovi Store. The device client for downloading and purchasing apps is also coming soon. Including Maemo, the Ovi Store would support four different platforms: Java, Symbian, Widgets and Maemo.

It is not clear why Nokia would distribute apps for Maemo in both Maemo Select and the Ovi Store. It could be that Maemo Select is an intermediary solution and that it will be replaced by the Ovi Store.

Nokia Maemo and the Ovi Store

With Nokia World around the corner (September 2 in Germany), a lot of news has come out in the last days. This week Nokia announced the launch of a netbook and now also presented their first mobile phone based on the Maemo platform. Nokia already offers an internet tablet based on Maemo, which is an Linux based operating system.

It is very interesting how all these new developments will influence Nokia’s app store strategy. Nokia now has its Ovi Store with content for Symbian phones, a netbook that is likely to run Windows and a new phone with the Linux based Maemo as operating system instead of Nokia’s long used Symbian.

The first signs on how this all affects Nokia’s app store offering are starting to appear. The first Nokia phone with Maemo will have something called Maemo Select, described as:

the place to discover the most popular downloads from the Maemo community and Ovi Store. Choose your favourite applications, themes, and wallpapers to personalise your Maemo device.

Maemo already has a community of developers that build and offer applications to consumers. On maemo.org close to 500 applications are available for the current Maemo platform. Looking at the Maemo Select description, Nokia will be offering this content combined with content from the Ovi Store on the new N900 phone.

It is unclear yet if, and exactly how, Maemo applications will be supported in the Ovi Store. Expect more news on this September 2nd.

Nokia launches a netbook; with an app store?

There has been a lot of response on Nokia’s announced entrance into the netbook market, which was announced yesterday. Nokia will launch a netbook, called Booklet 3G. Launch date and more details will be announced on Nokia World on September 2.

The Nokia netbook is rumoured to run on Windows 7. We wonder if it will have an app store, and if so, which one? Other players in this field have made the switch from Windows to the Android operating system and are launching own app stores.

Nokia has its own Ovi Store, and the promotion video shows two interesting things:

  • It will be possible to purchase music on the device from Nokia’s Music Store
  • Ovi services are supported (at least maps, file sharing and mobile phone sync)

We think there are three options on how Nokia could include an app store on this netbook:

  1. They won’t. Initially the focus will only be buying music, with no store for apps yet.
  2. Ovi Store will be supported. The current store is completely focussed on Symbian based mobile phones. Hence it will be difficult for Nokia to start a developer community to build great apps for their Windows based netbooks.
  3. Eventually, a Microsoft app store will run on it. Within this year, Microsoft will be offering app stores on mobile phones, media players and gaming devices. Analogous,  it would make sense to also use app stores on Windows 7 based Tablet PC’s and netbooks.

More details will be announced on September 2, during Nokia World in Stuttgart (Germany).

Nokia Ovi Store: content after one month

The Nokia Ovi Store is now live for one month. In this month, more content was added to the store, more countries got access and the store now offers operator billing for 27 operators.

So what content is available now? A comparison of what was there at launch and what is available today in Ovi Store:

In one month, the available content grew with 260%. The percentage paid content decreased a little, but is still very high at 88%, compared to the other major stores. For applications the paid percentage is the lowest, 66%. Not surprisingly, the popular ringtones and wallpapers are almost all charged for (99%).

Getting your application or game in the Ovi Store requires Java or Symbian signing, which is quite an extra effort. Nevertheless, the available content is growing very fast, indicating that many developers are taking steps to get their app in Ovi Store.

Last week, Nokia launched its Ovi Store. There are over 1,200 content items in there, of which 90% are paid.

Nokia will be extending the reach of the store very soon. The first phone with the Ovi Store pre-installed, the N97, is going to market in 75 countries this June.

The pre-installed Ovi Store on the N97 will offer the best experience so far for Nokia users. Right now, Nokia users still have to download the store to their phones first from http://store.ovi.com. There is also a browser based version, however, it does not offer the same experience as the full Ovi Store client.

More popular applications are also finding their way to the Ovi Store. Facebook just launched its application in the store, which is very popular in the Apple App Store and on Getjar. It will be interesting to see whether Facebook will be just as popular in Ovi.

Nokia Ovi store is launching

It has been buzzing around for weeks now, but the Nokia Ovi store launch has begun. It is now available in Australia, Ireland and Singapore. Nokia is soft launching the Store; a limited amount of Nokia users can get it via the Download! client, which will be replaced by Ovi Store.

Expect an official full launch soon!
