Distimo Report – December 2009

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010
It is our pleasure to release our monthly Distimo Report, based on December 2009 data. Distimo Report Logo
This report covers five application stores: Apple App Store, BlackBerry App World, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store and Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

This month’s most important findings are:

  • In Google Android Market, 65% of the publishers are located in the United States, 12% in the United Kingdom, 20% in Europe and 3% in Japan.
  • Publishers located in Europe price their applications highest with an average of $4.42, which is 49% higher than publishers located in the United States.
  • Applications in Apple App Store, Google Android Market and Nokia Ovi Store are priced at around $3.50. Windows Marketplace for Mobile and BlackBerry App World are more expensive, averaging $6.99 and $8.26 respectively.
  • Because of Microsoft’s market validation guidelines and additional fees for distributing applications in more than one country, the number of applications available in some countries is only a small percentage (<5%) of applications available worldwide.

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
Nokia N900

Nokia N900

December 31st, we wrote about Nokia Ovi Store showing the first Maemo apps for the N900, which is the first phone running this operating system. Just today Nokia announced that they released Ovi in beta for the N900, offering a collection of hand-picked content.

You can find the store on your N900 in the main menu of your device. Alternatively, you can visit the Ovi Store from your computer and select the N900 from the Nokia Mobile Selector (under All mobiles).

Currently, there are 30 applications available for the device, which are all free. Although Nokia says that there are already paid applications available (among which Documents To Go), we have not been able to find them in the store.

Nokia Ovi Store Shows First Maemo Apps

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

In November, Nokia launched the N900 phone, the first model running Maemo, a Linux based operating system. Nokia plans to launch more phones with Maemo in 2010. It was already expected, but now the signs are very clear: Maemo Applications are coming to the Ovi Store.

The Nokia Ovi Store currently shows the first Maemo apps:

The N900 is not included in the list of supported devices of Ovi Store, but several applications for Nokia’s new platform are already visible. Thanks to Allaboutphones.nl for spotting this.

The Ovi Store now contains 29 Maemo applications, which are all free. It is expected that Nokia will announce full support for Maemo in Ovi Store early January. We updated Appstores.info with these details.

Ovi Store “Reaching Close To 1 Million Downloads A Day”

Friday, December 11th, 2009

At a roundtable event in London, George Linardos, Nokia’s VP of Product & Media, said that their Ovi Store currently is generating close to 1 million downloads a day. “Download numbers are growing 100% month-on-month”, he said. Currently, the “typical user” downloads 9.5 items, and Nokia is targeting 300 million users in 2011, where they define users as one who has used Nokia’s service once in six months.

Additionally, in an interview at Nokia’s Capital Markets Day event the company said that a completely new version of the Ovi Store (2.0) will be launched in the first half of 2010, which “is a very, very strong new rewrite”. Linardos: “It’s being built from scratch with a few legacy components, which will be phased out over the course of 2.1 and 2.2. So it’ll probably be about 75% from scratch, and three or four months after that it will be 100%.”

Nokia Ovi Store has over 3,000 items

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

The Nokia Ovi Store has been live for four months. At its launch, 555 items were available in the store, of which 90% was paid.

To see how the available content is developing, we are tracking all items in the store. We made an overview of the number of available content items since its launch:

Nokia Ovi Store content

The store now has 3,239 items available, of which still the largest part paid. For all types of content, the proportion of free and paid items has been stable.

Applications are the fastest growing type of content in the store, with an increase of over 25% in the last month. Games are also showing growth over 20%. The other content types are growing slower, with the amount of Audio & Video items even decreasing.

We will keep tracking the content. Nokia Ovi Store will be added to our Distimo Report in the coming months, and we updated our mobile app store overview incorporating the numbers mentioned above.

Nokia Ovi Store: content after 3 months

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

The Nokia Ovi Store has been live for three months. At its launch, 555 items were available in the store, of which 90% paid.

To see how the available content is developing, we are tracking all items in the store. We made an overview of the number of available content items since its launch:

Content in Nokia Ovi Store

Right now, 2,810 items are available. This is a growth of 30% over the last 6 weeks. The proportion paid content is pretty stable around the 90%, which was the case from the store launch.

The fastest growing area is Applications. During the last six weeks, the number of available apps grew over 40%.

These numbers do not get close to the Apple App Store yet, but are clearly growing. An increasing number of developer that have popular applications in other stores, are entering the Ovi Store, which definitely helps in providing compelling content to consumers. See for example Shazam and Shozu.

The Symbian app store, sort of

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Today, Symbian announced its step into the app store world, by launching Horizon. Horizon will not be a complete app store itself, but more an intermediary between mobile developers and several different stores. The Symbian platform is used on a wide range of mobile phones across manufacturers, and they want to get the best content to their platform:

Symbian says it will provide assistance in developing an mobile application, getting the application into different app stores that use the Symbian platform, marketing the app, and reconciling the billing across the the different stores—all without taking a cut, according to Shaun Puckrin, head of community support for Symbian and the man currently running the Horizon program. (via Venturebeat)

So it’s not really a store, but more a developer program to help getting apps on the market. Developers will be able to submit their applications to the Horizon program, after which Horizon will take care of signing, uploading and getting payments in multiple stores. The initial supported stores are Nokia Ovi Store and Samsung Application Store. The last one is also interesting, see our post of earlier today.

The first apps will be published through Horizon this summer. Interested developers can sign up here.

Nokia Ovi Store: more operator billing

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Nokia Ovi Store was launched three weeks ago. For billing, consumers mainly had to rely on credit card. Not an ideal situation; not all youngsters have credit cards, and it’s just an extra step filling in those details if you want to buy a cool game or app.

Good news: Nokia announced it has signed deals with 27 operators to offer billing to Ovi Store users. This means that you will be able to buy an application with just one click, and the purchase will be charged to your phone bill. Easy and clear for the consumer.

Content in the store today
Ovi Store was launched with around 1.200 content items, of which 90% paid.

Today, there are 1.488 items available in the store, of which are still more than 90% paid. This significant percentage paid content is mainly caused by games and personalization items. If you look specifically at applications, the paid percentage is lower, 70%.
