Google Announces Free Navigation For Android

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Google just announced their turn-by-turn Google Maps Navigation application for Android 2.0. Best of all, it’s free.

A few hours ago we reported on TomTom’s Q3 2009 results, asking how these would be influenced in the coming months due to the upcoming turn-by-turn application from Google. Well, from the first impressions, we can conclude that it will be extremely hard for all these paid navigation apps to compete with this full featured free app from Google.

The top 5 most popular apps over the last week were:

  1. eBuddy (1,205K)
  2. Nimbuzz (429K)
  3. Opera Mini Web Browser (221K)
  4. Google Maps with Latitude (207K)
  5. Mig33 (136K)

These top 5 applications on GetJar have been in a battle for the top positions over the last months. Until recently, the total top 5 received 6M monthly downloads. With these new numbers, the top 5 already got downloaded over 2M times in just one week.

Earlier this month GerJar already reported over half a billion downloads on Getjar in total.

Top5 on Getjar: 6M monthly downloads

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

We are tracking applications and downloads on Getjar, a platform independent app store. Like we wrote in an earlier post, it is getting more important to have your app in the top listing in these app stores. A top position will give you consumer visibility, resulting in downloads.

On Getjar, the same 5 applications have been battling for the top positions over the last months. These are their download numbers from last week:

  1. eBuddy (448k)
  2. Nimbuzz (408k)
  3. Opera Mini (222k)
  4. Google Maps (252k)
  5. Mig33 (166k)

If you look at the total download numbers, we can see that the top5 applications on Getjar together get over 6M monthly downloads.

This might change however. With Getjar’s new mobile version of the store, more applications get visibility and the chance to move to the top. This is because of the change GetJar made in ranking the applications in their mobile version, as we outlined before. Still, it will be a challenge coming close to the large numbers of these five players, with or without the mobile version.

Battle for Getjar’s top positions

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Since a couple of months, we have been tracking applications on Getjar. There is a nice battle going on for the top positions in their store. These positions are important for developers, because the  higher your app, the more visibility you get among Getjar users on both the website and the mobile version.

Recently, the mobile version was updated to show the highest ranked applications per category, instead of one overall listing. This way more applications can be highlighted on the mobile homepage.

If you look at the weekly downloads of the top applications on Getjar, eBuddy and Nimbuzz are competing for rank 1. Opera, Google and Mig33 are very close for rank 3.

The top 5 applications combined are now getting over 1.3M downloads per week. Of these downloads, 900k is coming from instant messaging applications. It will be interesting to see if this will change because of Getjar highlighting more application categories on their mobile version.

Getjar is the leading independent mobile app store, especially for Java and Symbian applications. At this moment the store offers 47.000 different applications and games.

Recently Getjar closed a partnership with Sony Ericsson, to provide the content for the PlayNow Arena, which is Sony Ericsson’s app store.

Since the beginning of March, the same five applications have been the most downloaded applications on Getjar:

Of these five, three applications are focused on instant messaging, which have been going strong on Getjar for quite some time. This is how the top 5 applications performed  last month (downloads):

There is heavy competition for the top positions. eBuddy and Nimbuzz are competing for number 1, Opera, Google and Mig33 for the number 3 position over the last weeks.

The top 5 steadily sees over 1.4M downloads per week. It will be interesting to see what will happen to these numbers when Getjar starts delivering apps for Sony Ericsson PlayNow later this year.
