Half a billion downloads on Getjar

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Getjar today announced it is celebrating a new milestone; since their launch over half a billion applications have been downloaded from the store. Most of these downloads are on the Java and Symbian platforms. Considering that it is more difficult for a consumer to download applications on these platforms compared to iPhone and Android, this is a big milestone.

Getjar also talked about the download behavior of their users:

With over 50% of our consumers downloading content at least once a week, our research clearly shows that apps are for consumers of all ages, regardless of where they live, the handset they use or the platform their handset runs on. (see press-release)

At this moment, the top 5 most popular applications on Getjar are getting 6 million monthly downloads. These applications are all Java and Symbian, but other platforms also seem to grow in terms of downloads:

Adobe® Flash® technology based applications have also been successful on GetJar – some doing up to 20,000 downloads in one week. In fact, GetJar awarded premium placement to winners of the Adobe Flash Mobile Developer Contest.

“We’re glad to see that apps created with Flash technology contributed to GetJar’s milestone,” said Tom Barclay, senior product marketing manager, Adobe Flash Platform Business. “It’s important for Flash developers to look at services like GetJar to distribute their content to users across different mobile platforms and devices.”

We updated on mobile app store overview with these new numbers.

Top5 on Getjar: 6M monthly downloads

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

We are tracking applications and downloads on Getjar, a platform independent app store. Like we wrote in an earlier post, it is getting more important to have your app in the top listing in these app stores. A top position will give you consumer visibility, resulting in downloads.

On Getjar, the same 5 applications have been battling for the top positions over the last months. These are their download numbers from last week:

  1. eBuddy (448k)
  2. Nimbuzz (408k)
  3. Opera Mini (222k)
  4. Google Maps (252k)
  5. Mig33 (166k)

If you look at the total download numbers, we can see that the top5 applications on Getjar together get over 6M monthly downloads.

This might change however. With Getjar’s new mobile version of the store, more applications get visibility and the chance to move to the top. This is because of the change GetJar made in ranking the applications in their mobile version, as we outlined before. Still, it will be a challenge coming close to the large numbers of these five players, with or without the mobile version.

Battle for Getjar’s top positions

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Since a couple of months, we have been tracking applications on Getjar. There is a nice battle going on for the top positions in their store. These positions are important for developers, because the  higher your app, the more visibility you get among Getjar users on both the website and the mobile version.

Recently, the mobile version was updated to show the highest ranked applications per category, instead of one overall listing. This way more applications can be highlighted on the mobile homepage.

If you look at the weekly downloads of the top applications on Getjar, eBuddy and Nimbuzz are competing for rank 1. Opera, Google and Mig33 are very close for rank 3.

The top 5 applications combined are now getting over 1.3M downloads per week. Of these downloads, 900k is coming from instant messaging applications. It will be interesting to see if this will change because of Getjar highlighting more application categories on their mobile version.

Getjar launches app store for Virgin Mobile

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Both manufacturers and mobile operators are looking for ways to improve the way they offer mobile applications to their customers. But not everyone wants to develop a complete store himself and step in the game of getting the most interesting content. For those parties, Getjar seems to be getting a popular choice.

After announcing partnerships with UK mobile operator 3 and SonyEricsson to provide their mobile app stores, Getjar today announced to launch an app store for Virgin Mobile France. Getjar will provide its entire catalogue of free mobile applications for Virgin Mobile’s newly announced mobile app store, to be launched the 17th of June. The store will be fully available in French, which is something Getjar has not done before. This could open more doors to localized stores of more mobile operators.

With more of these partnerships being announced, the importance of having a popular mobile app on Getjar is also increasing. These top applications will also get good exposure to consumers on the partners where Getjar provides the store and contents.
