Most Popular Apps In The Chinese App Store

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

At the end of October, the Apple App Store was officially launched in China with the operator Unicom selling the first iPhones. The App Store was however already accessible in China at the end of August, but lacking the Games category. After three weeks of iPhone sales in China, we decided to make an overview of the most popular content.

These are the 20 most popular paid applications, since the launch of the iPhone in China:

A few takes from this:

  • Games are now supported in the Chinese Apple App Store
  • Prices for paid content are in USD
  • From the top 20, half of the applications are specifically aimed at Chinese users
  • 9 out of 20 top applications are Games, compared to 11 out of 20 for the US App Store (see for more details on the US app store our latest report).

These are the 20 most popular free applications, since the launch of the iPhone in China:

Compared to the most popular paid apps, a few things catch our attention:

  • 13 out of 20 top titles are Games
  • 8 of the top 20 applications are specifically aimed at Chinese users

As the Wall Street Journal reports, there are big opportunities for developers in the Chinese App Store. Especially if the billing methods, that are now limited to credit card improve, because credit cards are not common for Chinese consumers yet.

We will keep tracking the applications in the Apple App Store in China and will report whether it will continue to offer a large proportion of local content.

The Apple App Store hits China

Friday, October 30th, 2009

Mashable reports that the Unicom starts selling the iPhone today in China. As expected, it lacks WiFi. However, Unicom says (Yi Difei, Unicom spokesman) that they are talking with Apple about including WiFi in the next iPhone release:

We are talking with Apple and expect the problem to be solved by the end of this year

The major problem for Unicom right now is that the iPhone is available on the black market.

In August, we reported on the Games category being not available on the Chinese App Store. On October 23 however, the Games category became available, providing game developers access to the large Chinese market.

Apple’s deal with China Unicom is not exclusive

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

We previously reported on the deal between China Unicom and Apple to sell iPhones in China. Yesterday, Dow Jones Newswires reported that, unlike expected previously, that the deal in fact is not exclusive at all. According to the article, Apple spokeswoman Natalie Harrison said “I can confirm it is not an exclusive deal”.

Due to legal issues, Apple was already forced to offer the iPhone unlocked in several countries, including Belgium, Italy and France. This non exclusive deal is different however; the iPhone will not (yet?) be sold unlocked in China, but Apple is allowed to sign deals with other operators in China besides China Unicom. China Mobile said earlier this month that the company remains interested in offering the iPhone in China.

Gene Munster, senior research analyst with Piper Jaffray, already reported he expected Apple to adopt a multi-carrier model in the US. He mentioned that in France, Apple now enjoys a market share in the 40 percent range vs. about 15 percent in ROW in countries with exclusive carrier agreements. This not only increases the total revenue of iPhones sold due to increased units sold (although Apple sees a slightly decreased revenue per iPhone sold), this also enables Apple to increase the installed base of the iPhone OS significantly.
