BlackBerry App World To Be launched In China

Friday, July 16th, 2010

BlackBerry App World

Mobile Business Briefing reports that Research In Motion is to launch a Chinese version of BlackBerry App World ‘as part of a major company push into the world’s largest mobile market’. China’s head of RIM told Returs that App World will launch ’soon’.

In May BlackBerry services were launched in China via CDMA carrier China Telecom, and China Mobile is working with RIM on the production of devices capable of supporting its 3G network; currently BlackBerry services are only offered over their 2G GSM network.

According to the company, applications are downloaded at a rate approaching 1 million a day. As there are now 8,563 applications available, this amounts to about 120 downloads a day per application on average (at max).

RIM To Upgrade Device Family With Touch-Screen And Tablet

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

RIM is finishing a set of new devices and software to keep competing with touch-screen devices like Apple’s iPhone and iPad. RIM still sells more smartphones globally than any other company, only Nokia sells more on a yearly basis. But its North American market share is decreasing, as RIM has been slow to match Apple and Android’s touch-screen technology, smooth Internet-browsing capability and add-on software.

According to rumors, RIM is testing a touch-screen smartphone with a slide-out keyboard, also rumored as the BlackBerry Bold Slider. The phone runs on the new BlackBerry OS 6.0, which will make its debut by the end of the 3rd quarter. A major new feature of this new version of BlackBerry OS is that a BlackBerry running on this version works much like an iPhone, letting users swipe through screens and expand images with their fingers.

RIM is also testing a tablet device to serve as a larger-screen companion to its BlackBerry phone, according to people familiar with RIM’s plans. Nothing is yet confirmed regarding RIM’s tablet but the info going around the web paints the picture of a sub-10-inch touchscreen-equipped device that won’t have 3G support, instead relying on a BlackBerry to connect to a cellular network. The tablet could also be powered by the upcoming BlackBerry OS 6, including BlackBerry App World.

RIM’s BlackBerry App World Launches in Japan

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

RIM hasĀ launched BlackBerry App World in Japan. BlackBerry App World, the official on-device app store for BlackBerry smartphones, allows BlackBerry users to easily discover and download applications that are purposely built for their BlackBerry smartphones. “We are very pleased to offer the App World experience to our customers in Japan,” said Ueno Kimiaki, Managing Director of Japan, Research In Motion.

According to RIM, BlackBerry users can now download BlackBerry App World directly to their smartphone by visiting mobile.blackberry.com. BlackBerry App World is also accessible from a user’s desktop computer at http://ap.blackberry.com/jpn/appworld.

At the moment, the Japanese App World contains only free applications and the amount of applications is therefore less than in the United States or United Kingdom, for example. A date for the introduction of paid apps in Japan is not yet set.

BlackBerry App World Extends Billing

Monday, April 19th, 2010

According to crackberry, a website aimed to Blackberry users, the terms and conditions of Blackberry App World are updated. With the new terms, carrier- and credit card billing will be possible in the near future as annouched at the BlackBerry Developers Conference in November 2009.

Until now, only payments via the PayPal platform were possible. A big advantage of carrier billing is that it can allow a consumer to buy an application with a single click, whereas for PayPal a signup is required first. However, the new payment options come with a price, since the applicableĀ 80/20 revenue split has changed to the more common 70/30 split. The same revenue share for developers as we see nowadays on other platforms like the Apple Appstore and Android Market.

BlackBerry App World Adds Themes Category

Monday, December 7th, 2009
App World Themes

September 5th Google added, among other categories, the Themes category to Android Market. A few days ago we reported on BlackBerry adding the Test Center category to App World; and just today we noticed that BlackBerry App World added a Themes category as well. Right now the Themes category contains the following subcategories:

  • Abstract
  • Holiday
  • Movies & TV
  • Nature
  • People
  • Sports Themes
  • Technology
  • Transportation

The Themes category already contains 152 applications, compared to only three applications (MySpace, eBay and Role Call Reminder) in the Test Center category, while that category was launched about two weeks ago. The average price is $6.15, with a small percentage of apps being free.

Besides Google Android Market and BlackBerry App World, Nokia Ovi Store has a Themes category as well. The Apple App Store and Windows Marketplace for Mobile lack a similar category.

BlackBerry App World Gets Test Center

Friday, December 4th, 2009

BlackBerry App World has been around since April this year and quite a lot happened since then:

  • After launching in only the US, Canada and UK, App World is now available in 19 countries;
  • A webstore was launched to browse the full content from a PC;
  • The store now contains 3,500 Applications and Games;
  • Next to Applications and Games, Themes and Widgets are coming to the store early next year;
  • More monetization options for developers; In-App Purchasing is coming in 2010;
  • Next to billing via PayPal, carrier billing that will allow consumers to buy content with just one click is on its way.

Now Research In Motion announced the launch of Test Center. This is a special category within App World that contains applications in beta. This allows developers to get early feedback on their applications before launcing a final version in App World:

Today, Test Center contains 3 applications; MySpace, eBay and Role Call Reminders. Developers that want to have their applications in Test Center can submit them to BlackBerry for review, just like for the normal application categories.

BlackBerry App World: In-App Purchasing And More

Friday, November 13th, 2009

This week, the BlackBerry Developer Conference was held. During the conference some interesting announcements on BlackBerry App World were made:

(via IntoMobile)

(via IntoMobile)

In-App Purchasing

Apple was the first store supporting In-App Purchasing, allowing developers to monetize both free and paid applications in various new ways. See more in our latest report. Good news for BlackBerry developers, App World will also start supporting In-App Purchasing in 2010. It is not yet clear if this will be available for both free and paid applications.

Carrier billing

Right now, consumers that purchase an application in App World, pay using PayPal. In 2010, carrier billing will also be supported. This will make it a lot easier to purchase an application, where the amount will end up on the user’s monthly phone bill. Carriers and countries that will have carrier billing are yet to be announced.

Themes and Widgets

Like previously announced, more content is coming to App World. Themes will now also be available in the store. A new type of content, Widgets, will also be supported. For the user, there will be no notable difference between the current applications and new added widgets in App World. Both Themes and Widgets are today not yet available in the store, but are coming soon.
