Distimo Report July 2009 – Apple App Store & Android Market

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

We publish monthly reports to highlight trends in the different mobile app stores. The Distimo Report – July 2009 is now available and covers the Apple App Store and Google Android Market. Starting this month, we will report on cross store trends.

You can download this report free of charge.

The new findings in this report are:

  • A negative trend can be identified in the total price of the Overall Top 100 for the Apple App Store. This however was influenced by the turn-by-turn navigation apps MobileNavigator Europe and MobileNavigator America, which were both published by NAVIGON AG. Turn-by-turn navigation apps are still popular.
  • Pricing of applications in the Apple App Store and Android Market is quite similar, except for the Reference category which has a much higher average price on Google Android Market.
  • The most popular games on Android Market cost between $0.99 and $5.95, with most going for $2.99, while for the Apple App store, most are priced very low ($0.99), and a few higher at $6.99- $9.99
  • Games are still the most popular applications in the Apple App Store, with slightly more apps in the monthly paid Top 15 than in the free Top 15.
  • Classic games on Android Market are more popular than in the Apple App Store, with even 3 out of the 15 most popular games for Android being emulators. These types of emulators are not allowed in the Apple App Store.
  • Tools are very popular paid apps for Android, with 7 apps from the application category bvery different, there are no productivity/utilities apps for Apple in the overall Top 15.

Apple App Store category reports

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

For anyone interested in the mobile ecosystem, we provide reports giving insight in important developments in different application stores. To demonstrate the sort of analytics we provide, we publish a free monthly Apple App Store report (US). You can download this free report here.

Since the launch of our Apple App Store report we have been receiving a lot of questions regarding analytics on specific application categories. The free report we publish monthly highlights the important developments in the overall listings, but does not go in depth on specific application categories. Questions we receive are for example :

I will publish a game in the App Store, what are the most successful price points?

How many new applications are published in my category each month?

The App Store rankings change daily, but what are the most popular apps in my category over a longer period of time?

To answer questions like these, we are now publishing Apple App Store category reports. You select the specific category on which you want to have analytics, and we provide a report in the same structure as our monthly free report on the overall listings, of which you can download a free example here.

The category reports are based on US data of one whole month, of all applications in one specific category. The contents of  the report are:

  1. Most popular paid applications (monthly)
  2. Most popular free applications (monthly)
  3. New paid applications
  4. New free applications
  5. Total price of the top 100, displayed per day
  6. Price distribution (the number of applications per price-point), and monthly change
  7. Price distribution by rank (the average price per rank), and monthly change

Category reports are available for €149  and can be ordered here. You will receive the report within three working days.

Apple App Store report – June 2009

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

The Distimo Apple App Store Report – June 2009 is now available. You can download the report free of charge.

For parties interested in the mobile ecosystem, Distimo provides reports giving insight in important developments in different application stores. To demonstrate which sort of analytics we can provide, we publish a free monthly Apple App Store report (US). Reports on any other country where the App Store has launched are also available.

The most important findings in this report are:

  • The total price of the Overall Top 100 is still very unstable. Especially the release of the iPhone OS 3.0 on June 17th had a large influence on prices, mainly caused by the release of turn by turn GPS navigation applications.
  • The Medical category is clearly the most expensive category in the App Store. However, the Business, Navigation, Productivity and Reference categories are significantly more expensive than the other categories as well.
  • Games are still the dominant app category in the paid app section, followed by Entertainment apps.
  • For the free section, there is more diversity in the types of apps. Games are still popular, but the Utilities category is pretty popular as well with three apps in the Top 15.

Next to our monthly published report, we deliver custom reports on the app store market. Custom reports are aimed at providing the specific app store analytics that are relevant to your company and are available for the Apple App Store and Android Market.

Apple App Store Report United States – May 2009

Friday, June 5th, 2009

At Distimo we track everything that happens in all major mobile app stores. Every month we publish reports that outline important developments. We just released our Apple App Store Report United States – May 2009.

This US report is available free of charge. Since the App Store content and trends are very country specific, we provide reports for each country where the App Store has launched. These reports are available here.

The most important findings of our May 2009 United States report are:

  • Prices of the most popular apps increased 12.9%, mainly caused by the decreased amount of apps priced $0.99, and the increased amount of apps priced at $4.99, $5.99 and $6.99
  • Prices of the most popular apps are highly fluctuating. In May the prices of the Top 100 increased 12.9%, while we saw a decrease of 7.9% in our April report (United States). This seems to be very country specific however; we found prices to have decreased 9% in France for example.
  • Among the free and paid Top 10 apps, games and entertainment apps were most popular
  • Paid apps were able to maintain a top ranking much longer than free apps
  • 27% of the most popular apps have been updated in May
  • Price changes seem to have an instant influence on ranking
