Case Study: The Impact Of A Lower Price On Your Ranking In The Apple App Store

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Last week, turn-by-turn navigation app company Navigon discounted all their navigation apps in the Apple App Store by 50%, to celebrate the first anniversary of its MobileNavigation iPhone apps in the App Store. MobileNavigator is one of most popular turn-by-turn navigation application for the iPhone. Navigon claims that they have sold more than a million iPhone apps on the App Store and is currently one of the top 5 grossing iPhone apps on the US App Store.

Navigon’s MobileNavigator iPhone apps were on sale for four days, starting August 12 and ending August 15, We analyzed the impact of this sale on the application’s ranking in the store. The chart below displays the rank of MobileNavigator Europe in France for the first seventeen days of August. The sale period is indicated using a light gray box.

Before the sale started, the MobileNavigator Europe app was ranked between rank 150 and 300 in the Top Overall category. At the first day of the sale, its rank instantly increased to a number 5 position. After the 3-day sale, the rank started dropping again and lowered to a position of 48. An interesting fact is that the estimated total revenue of Navigon also increased during the sale, which can be concluded based on the higher rank (increased from #9 to #1) in the Top Overall Top Grossing list.

Distimo Monitor: iPad and Google Android Market Support

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

It is our pleasure to announce the release of our new version of Distimo Monitor, which now has full Google Android Market and Apple iPad support. The most important new features of this update are:

iPad Support

Last month Apple released their iPad and developers are now able to publish apps for this device. In this release of Monitor we offer all functionality that was already available for iPhone applications, but now also for iPad apps!

As of now, Distimo Monitor distinguishes between iPhone and iPad rankings. iPad rankings are displayed as an icon that shows the back of an iPad.

Google Android Market: Downloads & Revenue

Distimo Monitor is the first analytics tool that provides detailed insights in your Google Android Market download & revenue figures. Monitor now offers stand-alone support for Google Android Market; also available if you do not have applications in other stores. Monitor now automatically imports your Android download data and calculates the downloads & revenue per day.

Improved Filter Bar

As a developer, you want to quickly find the information you are looking for. That’s why we redesigned our filter bar. The new filter bar now lets you easily find the application you are looking for by entering a part of its name in the search field.

Additionally, the new filter bar lets you sort the applications or countries based on either the name or number of downloads, enabling you to quickly analyze the applications that are performing well.

Chart Exports

You can now export any chart from Distimo Monitor as an image. After exporting you can use this image for your internal or external communication.

We hope you will find this new Monitor version useful!

If you have an application for iPhone, iPad or Android, start using the free Distimo Monitor now on: http://monitor.distimo.com

Distimo Launches Free App Store Analytics Tool for Mobile Developers

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Big day for the whole team here at Distimo. Today we are launching Distimo Monitor in public beta! Many thanks goes out to all the developers that helped us improve Monitor in the last months.

So what does Distimo Monitor do?

Monitor is a free app store analytics tool for mobile developers that offers insight into the performance of a developer’s apps and their competitors’ in multiple app stores.  Distimo Monitor collects all relevant statistics about mobile applications across all app  stores and provides developers with a comprehensive dashboard that includes the total daily downloads, revenues and rankings worldwide of their application(s). It also allows the developer to see how they stack up against their competitors by comparing their own apps against competitive apps in any country. Developers can then use this knowledge to adjust pricing and distribution channels to maximize the growth and revenue streams of their apps.

Distimo Monitor - Dashboard

Features unique to Distimo Monitor include:

  • Free to use
  • Monitor daily download and revenue figures
  • No code insertion required in the developer’s application
  • Provides valuable insight into performance of competing applications
  • Monitor unlimited number of applications
  • Currency conversion for all major currencies
  • Support for multiple stores including the Apple App Store and Google Android Market

What do I need to start?

If you have an application published in the Apple App Store, you can start straight away and also add your Google Android Market applications. Standalone support for Google Android Market will be added soon. We are also planning to add additional support for other app stores including BlackBerry App World, Nokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog, Windows Marketplace for Mobile, as well as mobile operator and independent stores such as Verizon VCast and GetJar.

Take it for a spin

Distimo Report July 2009 – Apple App Store & Android Market

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

We publish monthly reports to highlight trends in the different mobile app stores. The Distimo Report – July 2009 is now available and covers the Apple App Store and Google Android Market. Starting this month, we will report on cross store trends.

You can download this report free of charge.

The new findings in this report are:

  • A negative trend can be identified in the total price of the Overall Top 100 for the Apple App Store. This however was influenced by the turn-by-turn navigation apps MobileNavigator Europe and MobileNavigator America, which were both published by NAVIGON AG. Turn-by-turn navigation apps are still popular.
  • Pricing of applications in the Apple App Store and Android Market is quite similar, except for the Reference category which has a much higher average price on Google Android Market.
  • The most popular games on Android Market cost between $0.99 and $5.95, with most going for $2.99, while for the Apple App store, most are priced very low ($0.99), and a few higher at $6.99- $9.99
  • Games are still the most popular applications in the Apple App Store, with slightly more apps in the monthly paid Top 15 than in the free Top 15.
  • Classic games on Android Market are more popular than in the Apple App Store, with even 3 out of the 15 most popular games for Android being emulators. These types of emulators are not allowed in the Apple App Store.
  • Tools are very popular paid apps for Android, with 7 apps from the application category bvery different, there are no productivity/utilities apps for Apple in the overall Top 15.

Apple App Store category reports

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

For anyone interested in the mobile ecosystem, we provide reports giving insight in important developments in different application stores. To demonstrate the sort of analytics we provide, we publish a free monthly Apple App Store report (US). You can download this free report here.

Since the launch of our Apple App Store report we have been receiving a lot of questions regarding analytics on specific application categories. The free report we publish monthly highlights the important developments in the overall listings, but does not go in depth on specific application categories. Questions we receive are for example :

I will publish a game in the App Store, what are the most successful price points?

How many new applications are published in my category each month?

The App Store rankings change daily, but what are the most popular apps in my category over a longer period of time?

To answer questions like these, we are now publishing Apple App Store category reports. You select the specific category on which you want to have analytics, and we provide a report in the same structure as our monthly free report on the overall listings, of which you can download a free example here.

The category reports are based on US data of one whole month, of all applications in one specific category. The contents of  the report are:

  1. Most popular paid applications (monthly)
  2. Most popular free applications (monthly)
  3. New paid applications
  4. New free applications
  5. Total price of the top 100, displayed per day
  6. Price distribution (the number of applications per price-point), and monthly change
  7. Price distribution by rank (the average price per rank), and monthly change

Category reports are available for €149  and can be ordered here. You will receive the report within three working days.
