Acer Comes With App Store for Android, Windows, Chrome

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Last August, Acer  announced plans to open an own application store. These plans are now getting more clear; the company just said it will be launching an application store mid this year:

The application store will be unveiled around the middle of the year with software to support Google’s Android platform, currently used on Acer’s netbooks and smartphones, as well as Microsoft’s Windows and Windows Mobile systems, while Google Chrome software will be added later, Wong said. Applications will be low-cost or free, he said, declining to specify a price or developer names (Jim Wong, president of IT Products division).

Acer is also launching an e-Book reader and has plans for a tablet. With launching an application store for Android, Windows and Google Chrome, Acer might be going for a device-wide store, spanning mobile phones, netbooks, e-Book readers and tablets. Intel also just launched a store for netbooks, in which Acer is one of the partners.

It will be very interesting to hear more details on Acer’s plans. We’ll keep you posted and will add the store to Appstores.info once sufficient details are enclosed.

Acer goes Android

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Acer just announced its first Android phone, the Acer Liquid. The launch date is not mentioned yet, but is expected to be in November.

The Acer Liquid will run the new 1.6 version of the Android OS. It is not confirmed yet if the Android Market will be present on the phone, though it would be very likely. Acer previously announced it would be launching an own app store this year. It is not yet clear whether this will be based on the Android Market.

An updated Android Market will be present in the 1.6 Android OS. As reported earlier, the most important new features of this Android Market are clear separated free and paid application rankings and screenshots of apps. The separated free and paid rankings will make it easier for a developer with paid applications to get visibility in the most popular rankings.

See a demo of the new Android Market below:

Acer is putting a lot of effort into Android: their first netbook running on Android is now also on pre-sale.

Acer launching app store

Acer is also joining the app store game. The company just announced it is planning to launch an app store later this year.

Acer released two mobile phones this year, but also has big plans for netbooks. Their announcement opens the possibility to also support these netbooks with the upcoming store. Over the next months, five more devices will be launched and Acer will also join Android with one phone.

More details are unclear at this moment, it will also be interesting to see how the combination of Android Market on one device and an own Acer app store on other devices will work.
