Handster; app store for WM, Symbian, Android, BB and Java

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

On our blog and mobile app store overview we try to cover all stores in the market. Next to the likes of the Apple App Store and Google’s Android Market, there are several smaller  stores that are receiving less attention. One of these stores is Handster, an app store for Windows Mobile, Symbian, Android, BlackBerry and Java.

The store was launched May 26 2005, so it has been around for a while already. That’s probably the reason for the tagline of the store on their website still being “Windows Mobile Software”. Besides this platform, support for Symbian, Android, BlackBerry and Java was added October 21, 2009. According to the company, they have 5,700 applications available right now, which is more than BlackBerry App World, but significantly less than Google Android Market and the Apple App Store.

Until now, they have had 10M downloads to date, averaging about 2M downloads a year. Although we haven’t been able to check, the company says they support in-app purchasing and subscription billing, which should be an advantage over the majority of stores that don’t support these payment types.

Besides Handster.com, Handster also provides white-label app stores, such as the iPaq Application Store.

We added the store to our app store overview.
