Apps Inside The Car

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010
Ford logo

One month ago we wrote about Ford’s launch of an in-car App Store. According to Mashable, Ford annouced an upgrade of the SYNC platform enabling to control Android and Blackberry apps by voice commands. The Ford SYNC platform already allowed drivers to bring nearly any mobile phone and some media players into their vehicle and operate them using voice commands, the vehicle’s steering wheel, or radio controls.

The first car including the new features will be the 2011 Fiesta, while other cars have to wait for the software upgrade next year. The first three supported apps are Stitcher, Pandora and OpenBeak. Ford also launched a Developers Network to facilitate further development on the platform.

To see how it all works, check out this demo of using Pandora with Ford’s SYNC platform in the Fiesta:

Distimo Response On New Apple iPhone Developer Agreement

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

There’s been a lot of commotion in the news around the latest version of Apple’s iPhone Developer Program License Agreement. Yesterday, we talked to Paul Boutin from VentureBeat regarding the question whether Apple is changing the rules on iPhone app analytics.

This discussion started because of a new section in the developer agreement that would concern device data and user data, limiting third parties to collect and process such data.

Distimo offers analytics to developers without the need to insert any code into their application(s). Furthermore, our Distimo Monitor service does not rely on a third party API as outlined in the new iPhone developer agreement and does not collect, send or process any Device Data or User Data from the developer’s application. In short, Distimo is not impacted by the new terms for Apple’s iPhone Developer Program License Agreement.

We do hope however, that Apple will not ban analytics parties that in fact work with an API. There is a strong market demand among developers for high quality analytics on their application’s performance. We believe analytics services help developers improve the quality of their apps, and are therefore valuable to parties like Apple too.

Since we are not impacted by the new terms, the Distimo Monitor service will remain available for iPhone or Android developers that want to track the performance of their own and competing applications. More info on Distimo Monitor is available here.

Distimo Launches Free App Store Analytics Tool for Mobile Developers

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Big day for the whole team here at Distimo. Today we are launching Distimo Monitor in public beta! Many thanks goes out to all the developers that helped us improve Monitor in the last months.

So what does Distimo Monitor do?

Monitor is a free app store analytics tool for mobile developers that offers insight into the performance of a developer’s apps and their competitors’ in multiple app stores.  Distimo Monitor collects all relevant statistics about mobile applications across all app  stores and provides developers with a comprehensive dashboard that includes the total daily downloads, revenues and rankings worldwide of their application(s). It also allows the developer to see how they stack up against their competitors by comparing their own apps against competitive apps in any country. Developers can then use this knowledge to adjust pricing and distribution channels to maximize the growth and revenue streams of their apps.

Distimo Monitor - Dashboard

Features unique to Distimo Monitor include:

  • Free to use
  • Monitor daily download and revenue figures
  • No code insertion required in the developer’s application
  • Provides valuable insight into performance of competing applications
  • Monitor unlimited number of applications
  • Currency conversion for all major currencies
  • Support for multiple stores including the Apple App Store and Google Android Market

What do I need to start?

If you have an application published in the Apple App Store, you can start straight away and also add your Google Android Market applications. Standalone support for Google Android Market will be added soon. We are also planning to add additional support for other app stores including BlackBerry App World, Nokia Ovi Store, Palm App Catalog, Windows Marketplace for Mobile, as well as mobile operator and independent stores such as Verizon VCast and GetJar.

Take it for a spin

You can try the demo or sign up and start using Distimo Monitor today. We hope you like it! As always, feedback is much appreciated.

An App Store In ….. A Car

Monday, March 15th, 2010
Ford logo

After phones, gaming devices, e-readers, televisions, netbooks, tablets, PC’s and smart pens now even cars will get their very own app store. Ford revealed they will soon start an in-car application store. This announcement was made on the South By South West Interactive conference in Austin Texas. The store will allow developers to build software that will run in customizable displays in Ford’s new web-enabled cars.

Given the statistics already gathered by the cars’ software like the way you drive, purchased apps could provide you with geo information or social features for connecting with your nearest friends. Interesting opportunities presented by Ford encouraged drivers to drive ‘greener’ by playing a game where you could earn points by driving more fuel efficient and compare your score to your friends.

Ford indicated that the policy for publishing in the app store will be managed by Ford, which is comparable with many of the current mobile app stores.

DARPA Announces Military App Store

Friday, March 5th, 2010

More and more appstores recently see the light of day, all trying to get a piece of a market which will, according to research2guidance, hit the 15bn USD in 2013. However, the development of the new appstore of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is most likely less financially motivated. A couple of days ago they announced that an apps marketplace will be created to enable innovation to meet user needs based on collaboration between the development community and the involved communities of end-users.

DARPA chose the Android platform for the initial implementation. They already ruled out Windows in an early stage and recently dropped the iPhone platform as well. According to the announcement: “DARPA is seeking applications to fill a diverse set of needs, including the tactical battlefield, humanitarian missions, disaster recovery, and other mission areas. Example functionalities include command and control, reporting, mission planning, intelligence/surveillance/reconnaissance, real-time collaboration, geospatial visualization, analysis, language translation, training, and logistics tracking. Special attention must be paid to the apps’ user interfaces and usability functions, as well as striving towards general simplicity and ease-of-use”.
