Mobile World Congress 2010

The Mobile World Congress will be held in Barcelona, 15 – 18 February, organized by the GSMA.

On Monday 15th, Vincent Hoogsteder will give a presentation during the “Mobile Applications – Innovation Vs Fragmentation” event:

The success of Apple and their App Store seems to have taken the mobile industry unawares – as a consequence we are seeing the rise of a variety of these application marketplaces from mobile operators, platform providers and handset manufacturers, amongst others and fragmentation becomes a significant issue.

This session will examine the impact of fragmentation and strategies to counter it. It will also delve into the latest innovations available to developers and how these are impacting the consumer, as well as pertinent issues such as pricing and marketing, channels to market and delivery mechanisms and how to get the application experience to the mass market.

Vincent’s presentation will start at 14:00 and is titled “State of play – mobile application stores”. See the full MWC agenda here. Feel free to contact us if you’re interested in meeting at MWC. We hope to see you there!

iPad: The App Store And The iBooks Store

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Steve Jobs announced the iPad at his keynote a few hours ago. Aside from all the features of the device, he talked about the App Store and the iBooks app/Store as well. The iPad will be able to run (almost) all applications currently available in the App Store for the iPhone/iPod Touch. These applications will either be resized to fit the screen or developers can optimize the application for the larger screen of the iPad. These applications can be downloaded using the App Store and new applications that have been designed just for the iPad will be highlighted.

Besides the App Store itself, the iBooks app will be available for download in the App Store allowing the user to read and buy books. Books will be published in the ePub format, allowing publishers to embed multimedia directly into books. However, the iBooks app is not yet available in any other country than the US: “iBooks available in the U.S. only.”

There is no information yet on the revenue share of the books sold through the iBooks app. We will update this post when we know more.

Distimo Report – December 2009

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010
It is our pleasure to release our monthly Distimo Report, based on December 2009 data. Distimo Report Logo
This report covers five application stores: Apple App Store, BlackBerry App World, Google Android Market, Nokia Ovi Store and Windows Marketplace for Mobile.

This month’s most important findings are:

  • In Google Android Market, 65% of the publishers are located in the United States, 12% in the United Kingdom, 20% in Europe and 3% in Japan.
  • Publishers located in Europe price their applications highest with an average of $4.42, which is 49% higher than publishers located in the United States.
  • Applications in Apple App Store, Google Android Market and Nokia Ovi Store are priced at around $3.50. Windows Marketplace for Mobile and BlackBerry App World are more expensive, averaging $6.99 and $8.26 respectively.
  • Because of Microsoft’s market validation guidelines and additional fees for distributing applications in more than one country, the number of applications available in some countries is only a small percentage (<5%) of applications available worldwide.

You can download the report here.

This report was covered on TechCrunch here.

Acer Comes With App Store for Android, Windows, Chrome

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Last August, Acer  announced plans to open an own application store. These plans are now getting more clear; the company just said it will be launching an application store mid this year:

The application store will be unveiled around the middle of the year with software to support Google’s Android platform, currently used on Acer’s netbooks and smartphones, as well as Microsoft’s Windows and Windows Mobile systems, while Google Chrome software will be added later, Wong said. Applications will be low-cost or free, he said, declining to specify a price or developer names (Jim Wong, president of IT Products division).

Acer is also launching an e-Book reader and has plans for a tablet. With launching an application store for Android, Windows and Google Chrome, Acer might be going for a device-wide store, spanning mobile phones, netbooks, e-Book readers and tablets. Intel also just launched a store for netbooks, in which Acer is one of the partners.

It will be very interesting to hear more details on Acer’s plans. We’ll keep you posted and will add the store to Appstores.info once sufficient details are enclosed.

Samsung Application Store - Countries

The store has been available since September last year and now offers 549 applications. From mid-February, Samsung phones in Singapore and Germany will be shipped with the Application Store pre-installed. Samsung is also launching a new software suite, called Kies, which allows users to search and download applications directly from their PC. The applications are then installed onto their mobile device when synced with the PC.

The Samsung Application Store now supports three phone models, with more to come. We have updated appstores.info with the information above.

Motorola Launches SHOP4APPS App Store In China

Friday, January 22nd, 2010

Last December the first signs came out that Motorola was planning to launch an own Android application store. Now the store, called SHOP4APPS, is officially launched in China.

The store will be new pre-installed on Motorola smartphones in China starting in time for Chinese New Year (February 14, 2010). Next to offering the store on its own handsets, Motorola will also offered it to other manufacturers or partners in China for license.

The content in the store will be tailored per operator, and both free and paid apps will be available. Developers can submit their applications to the store free of charge and Motorola states that apps are approved within 1-5 days.

Revenue share for developers is not disclosed yet. It is also unclear if SHOP4APPS will completely replace the Google Android Market on Motorola phones in China, though this is very likely. We will get back when more information becomes available on this, since it’s also very interesting to see how this will work in other countries where SHOP4APPS is introduced later this year.

SHOP4APPS is added to appstores.info.

Amazon To Launch App Store For Kindle

Amazon To Launch App Store For Kindle

Amazon To Launch App Store For Kindle

As Apple is rumored to announce its Tablet next Wednesday, Amazon will announce its App Store for Kindle this Thursday, according to The New York Times. The store will contain so called ‘active content’ for the Kindle,  which may be considered similar to Applications in Apple’s App Store. Amazon will have the common revenue share model, sharing 70% with developers and keeping 30% for themselves.

Although the Apple Tablet is likely to be a very different device than the Kindle (color screen, higher refresh rate etc.), the two devices are still likely to compete with each other. Both devices are mobile and have a screen large enough to read books. Already, books have been very popular on Apple’s App Store: in December, there were 19,697 apps in the Books category. This is the second largest category on the App Store, right after Games. What’s most interesting however is the high percentage of paid content: 92%.

However; have these books been successful? From our data, we can see that only about 1% of the applications in the Top Overall have been Books (December 2009). That’s a strikingly low number. This may be caused however by the fact that it is hard for single book titles to compete with e.g. Games, as these Games usually cater to a larger audience than one specific book.

We will update appstores.info when Amazon launches the Kindle store.

New Nokia Ovi Store Coming This Thursday?

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Updated: No new Ovi Store yet, but free turn-by-turn navigation with Ovi Maps.

Nokia is holding a high-profile press event this Thursday in London. Nokia said the announcement relates to Ovi and there is a lot of noise that they will release the new Nokia Ovi Store. Last December, Nokia’s George Linardos (VP Product & Media) already said Nokia would be launching a complete rehaul of the Ovi Store within months.

Nokia is definitely putting a lot of attention to the press event. So will we see the brand new Ovi Store? Count down with Nokia:

LG Releases Its First Android Device

LG's First Android Device: GW260

LG's First Android Device: GW260

As announced previously, LG just released its first Android device, the GW620 (LG InTouch max). Interestingly, LG touts the personalisation options of the phone through Google Android Market:

Personalise your phone with a series of apps to suit you, from news and weather apps, to games apps, and your favourite social networking apps including Facebook and Twitter.

The release follows LG’s announcement that Android will power half of the smartphones they will launch in 2010. This is bad news for Microsoft, as LG has shipped many Windows Mobile devices to date.

It doesn’t seem that LG is planning to include its own application store on the device, which currently supports applications for Windows Mobile only.

OpnMarket: Appstore For Free Windows Mobile Apps

Monday, January 18th, 2010
OpnMarket

OpnMarket

FreewarePocketPC is a web based storefront for free Windows Mobile applications that currently offers 6,700 titles. After a few months in beta, they now launched a new application store for free Windows Mobile Apps, called OpnMarket.

OpnMarket is an on-device store that supports Windows Mobile touch screen phones. Currently, 500 free applications are available. Users first have to download the client and register an account with FreewarePocketPC. More applications from FreewarePocketPC will be added to the store soon.

This is not the first independent store for Windows Mobile phones. Handmark also launched an on-device Windows Mobile store last August, with both free and paid applications. Other independent stores for Windows Mobile phones can be found here.

We added OpnMarket to appstores.info. See this video to watch how it looks and works:
