Android Market gets an update

September 2nd, 2009 by Vincent Hoogsteder

Google’s Android Market has been around now for ten months. At launch, there were only free applications available. Since then, Google has gradually been adding support for paid applications, now available in eight countries.

Cnet is now reporting that an update for the Android Market is coming with the new version of the Android OS. Two screenshots of the new Android Market:

The most interesting aspect of this update is the clear distinction of free and paid application. Until now, paid and free apps are displayed in the same application listings in Android Market. As a result, when users browse the market looking for popular apps, the paid ones will be ranked low in the list. By dividing paid and free applications in separate listings, it will be easier for Market users to discover popular paid content. This is of course interesting for developers that publish paid apps in the Android Market.

More details on this Android Market update are expected on September 10, when Motorola will announce its Android phone portfolio with the new Android version on the GigaOm Mobilize conference.
