Nokia Ovi Store: content after 6 weeks

July 8th, 2009 by Vincent Hoogsteder

The Nokia Ovi Store has been live for six weeks. At the launch, 90% of all content was paid. To see how this is developing and at what rate the content grows, we are tracking all items in the store. We made an overview of the number of available content items since its launch:

Right now, there are 2,174 items available in the Ovi Store, of which 88% is paid. The proportion free and paid items has been constant over the last weeks. The number of applications has increased 7% over the last two weeks, with still more than 60% paid content.

This amount of items puts Nokia side by side to Blackberry’s App World. Not a really honest comparision however; App World was launched in only three countries two months before the Ovi Store, compared to Nokia’s 75 supported countries.

The Ovi Store is pre-installed on only the N97, but more models will follow. The Ovi Store client is also supposed to take over the current Download! client that is present on most Nokia phones, but this has not been done yet for all countries. Like Blackberry, Nokia is trying to make the store more compelling for developers by giving more consumers access. However, it still requires signing of your application for both Symbian and Java, which is quite a step to take for developers. Let’s see how the content keeps growing and whether Nokia will manage to lower the threshold for getting applications published in Ovi Store.
