Half a billion downloads on Getjar

July 15th, 2009 by Vincent Hoogsteder

Getjar today announced it is celebrating a new milestone; since their launch over half a billion applications have been downloaded from the store. Most of these downloads are on the Java and Symbian platforms. Considering that it is more difficult for a consumer to download applications on these platforms compared to iPhone and Android, this is a big milestone.

Getjar also talked about the download behavior of their users:

With over 50% of our consumers downloading content at least once a week, our research clearly shows that apps are for consumers of all ages, regardless of where they live, the handset they use or the platform their handset runs on. (see press-release)

At this moment, the top 5 most popular applications on Getjar are getting 6 million monthly downloads. These applications are all Java and Symbian, but other platforms also seem to grow in terms of downloads:

Adobe® Flash® technology based applications have also been successful on GetJar – some doing up to 20,000 downloads in one week. In fact, GetJar awarded premium placement to winners of the Adobe Flash Mobile Developer Contest.

“We’re glad to see that apps created with Flash technology contributed to GetJar’s milestone,” said Tom Barclay, senior product marketing manager, Adobe Flash Platform Business. “It’s important for Flash developers to look at services like GetJar to distribute their content to users across different mobile platforms and devices.”

We updated on mobile app store overview with these new numbers.
