In App Purchase

A lot of news from Apple’s WWDC yesterday. One of the highlights for mobile developers: In App Purchase. With this, application users can purchase subscriptions and extra content from within applications.

Only for paid apps
Paid apps that are distributed in the Apple App Store will have the ability to offer In App Purchase. For apps that are free, this will not be possible yet.

Subscriptions and one-time billing
Developers will be able to offer both subscriptions and one-time purchases to their users. Subscriptions can be set on a monthly, yearly or other periodic basis of your choice.

70% revenue share
Developers will receive 70% revenue share for all purchases, both subscriptions and one-time purchases.

Launching June 17, 2009
In App Purchase is part of the 3.0 version of the iPhone OS.

This is very big news for developers; it opens up a whole new range of possible business models in the Apple App Store. At Distimo we will be tracking in app purchases from its launch.
