ShoZu comments on going from free to paid in the app store

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Last week, we wrote about ShoZu that started charging for their former free application in the Apple App Store. We had a look at the impact of this on their ranking, check out the previous post for more info.

We talked to ShoZu’s Jennifer Grenz, Vice President of Products and Marketing, who made some interesting comments on the move to go paid.

Why did ShoZu go for a paid model in the app store?

App stores are where the customers are, and where they’re going.  So it’s the perfect place to find and engage users, and get paid.

App stores allow us to better deliver our app to users, with more frequent updates than would otherwise be possible with preloads and other methods. So it’s the best place to deliver and support our users. We believe that biz models for mobile app developers will increasingly include a paid or freemium option that balances other forms of revenue (advertising, subscription, sponsorships). We believe this is where developers are headed, and that this is the winning model for developers in the long term.

Even more importantly, having a user pay for our apps compels us to further invest in our customers with innovation in technology and partnerships.  There’s an implied informal contract between us and the customers… that, since they’ve paid, we need to continue to add significant value.

What was the impact after you started charging for the app?

We have not seen a massive drop-off in iPhone downloads, and we’re happy with the transition and the level of acceptance.

We love to hear comments back from developers that are upfront trying these different business models today for mobile apps. Thanks to ShoZu for sharing this.

Verizon launching app store

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Yesterday, Verzion announced the launch of their VCast app store. The store will go live in the last quarter of this year and will support multiple platforms: Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile, Palm and Symbian.

Verizon already offered applications to their subscribers for several years, but only for the BREW platform. With this new step, Verizon says it wants to make it easier for developers to get their applications in several stores:

The ultimate goal he said is to make it as easy as possible for developers to get their applications in the hands of consumers and to create more channels for accessing this content. This means that applications that have already been approved for RIM’s App World store will move through the process as quickly as possible and be ported directly to the Vcast store. The goal is to have most applications approved and on the network within 14 days. (Lowell McAdam, CEO of Verizon Wireless, via cnet)

Billing
Consumers that buy applications in the VCast store, will be able to pay with just one click. No credit card or Paypal needed, the purchase will be billed on the monthly Verzion phone bill.

Developer revenue share
Developers will receive 70% revenue share on sold applications.

Verizon is the largest operator in the US, with now 87.7 million subscribers. We’ll keep track on the Verzion VCast launch and added the store to our mobile app store overview.

Impact of price changes in the Apple App Store: SGN example

Monday, July 27th, 2009

In our reports we analyze pricing developments in the Apple App Store. To get an idea of the impact of application pricing, it is always interesting to look at specific examples of applications that test various pricing points. One of these applications is F.A.S.T. — Fleet Air Superiority Training!. This game by publisher SGN has been very popular since its launch on June 6. According to TechCrunch, SGN saw a revenue of $1 Million in only six weeks.

SGN has been testing different price-points since its app has launched. Initially, it was available for $9.99, after which the price was decreased to $5.99 and all the way to $1.99 today. To see the impact of these price changes, we made an overview of the daily price and rank in the Games-Action category:

Daily price and rank in Games-Action category

Daily price and rank in Games-Action category

After launching at a price of $9.99, the app entered the top 100. But after being available for a week, the popularity declined and SGN decided to lower the price to $5.99. This had a significant influence on its ranking. Within one day, it went from rank 96 to 7. After a couple of days, the price was lowered again to $4.99, but without a major influence on ranking. Also the next decrease to $3.99 did not really impact popularity.

When the game’s rank began to lower in the beginning of July, another price decrease to $1.99 was applied. The same day the app returned in the top 10.

As shown in the above graph, SGN has been adjusting price levels to successfully influence its ranking. The question of course remains if the overall revenue earned was also maximized. In other words; does the higher rank and higher amount of downloads compensate the lower price in SGN’s total revenue?
